You might not recognize the broccoli growing in Cascadia’s Cornucopia, because it doesn’t appear like the small, green, tree-shaped snacks we find in the vegetable section of the grocery store. Still, the scrumptious brassica oleracea, or wild cabbage, is blooming beautifully and strong in the campus food forest. The broccoli family includes other greens like cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, and more-that I’ll let research on your own. Tyson, our resident garden expert, compared this green cabbage family to a family of dogs – one species, but many different varieties. You can learn more from Tyson in the video below. We encourage you to venture into the Cornucopia, sniff out the wild cabbage, and add some extra green to your salad today!
Green Tip: To harvest, simply snap off a piece of the flower or the buds. And, if you need a bit of musical inspiration, click on this link for a broccoli serenade. [To hear the song only, start at minute 1:50-3:05]
